Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was not only known for his raucous voice and style but for using elaborate stage props, many times rising from a coffin to perform his classic, “I Put A Spell On You,” which is now worth up to $200.00. Often wearing leopard skins and colorful leather, Hawkins originally wanted to be an opera singer. It has also been reported that he fathered up to 75 children. So maybe there are lot of Screamin Jays out there. An original 1956 album, “At Home With Screamin’ Jay Hawkins,” released on Epic Records, can get you $600.00 today.

These are records you should know about. For at least fifty years Doo Wop records have continued to increase in value. Here are two more to look for. From 1956 comes the Four Buddies with their single, “Delores.” Released on Club 51 Records, a black vinyl copy is worth up to $800.00. The value jumps up to $2,500.00 for a red vinyl copy. In 1953, States Records released “I Can’t Believe” by the Hornets. A black vinyl copy is valued up to $5,000.00. Double that to $10,000.00 for a red vinyl copy.

“Records you should know about” are records that most people have never heard by recording artists most people have never heard of BUT can be worth a LOT of money. Small Faces formed in London in 1965. By 1967 they had their biggest hit with “Itchycoo Park.” It was a great example of psychedelic Rock N Roll when it hit the top-20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is worth up to $20.00.  In 1968, Small Faces released the album, “Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake.” The title was taken from a brand of tobacco made in Liverpool. In 1958, Annette Funicello hit big with the single, “Tall Paul.” It was during the time she had a crush on Paul Anka. A year later Carole King released the single, “Short Mort,” which was a parody of Annette’s hit. But Paul Anka wasn’t all that tall so maybe it should have been “Short Paul,” but of course that wouldn’t have sounded so good. “Tall Paul,” released on Disneyland Records, is worth up to $25.00 while Carole King’s “Short Mort,” released on RCA, can get you $100.00 today.

Bob Ritchie is better known by the name we all know, Kid Rock. Starting out as a rapper, his music progressed more toward Rock and Country. Once married to the sexy Pamela Anderson, Kid Rock has had his share of run-ins with the law as well as his share of hits. His arrests may have given him some street creds as a rapper. In 1993 Continuum Records released Kid Rock’s album “The Polyfuze Method.” A copy can get you $200.00 today.

Ron Holden is not a name as well known as other early Rock N Roll stars but in 1960 he had a top-10 hit with a song called “Love You So.” It gained him an appearance on American Bandstand. But the world of touring was too much for him; so he went home to Seattle and became a popular night club owner. The album, “Love You So,” released on Donna Records, is worth up to $200.00. The single, “Love You So,” released on Nite Owl records can get you $500.00 today.

Rock N Roll Hall of Fame band, Santana, named for lead guitarist and founder, Carlos Santana, was one of the most successful groups to emerge from Woodstock. Winners of 8 Grammy Awards, the band was born in 1967 in San Francisco. Shortly after their Woodstock appearance, Columbia Records released Santana’s first album. It quickly became a top-10 smash on Billboard’s album chart. The album single, “Evil Ways,” also went top-10 but is worth no more than $10.00. Known as the “Big O,” Roy Orbison began his highly successful career as a Rockabilly artist but found a bigger audience with powerful ballads like “Running Scared,” “It’s Over,” and the number 1 smash, “Crying,” which Orbison wrote after seeing an old girlfriend. The single with picture sleeve can now sell for over $50.00. The “Crying” album was released on Monument Records in 1962. Wanda Jackson is the Queen of Rockabilly. Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, she was often on stage shows with Elvis in the mid-50’s. Her Rock N Roll career peaked in 1960 with her signature hit, “Let’s Have a Party.” That 45 on Capitol records is worth up to $30.00. Then the Country side of her career blossomed with hits like “Right or Wrong” and “I’m in the Middle of a Heartache.” In 1960, Capitol Records released the album, “Rockin’ With Wanda.” An original copy can get you $300.00 today.

The Impressions began their long and successful career in 1958 when they added two of Rhythm & Blues’ greatest stars, Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. In 1998, the group was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
