In February of 1971 George Harrison hit the top 10 with “What Is Life.” Harrison originally wrote the song for Apple Records label-mate, Billy Preston, thinking it would be a “catchy pop song” to follow up Preston’s “That’s The Way God Planned It.” But when Harrison realized that Preston was then going for a more funky sound, he decided to record it himself. The 45, released on Apple Records, is now worth up to $100.00 with its picture sleeve.
“That Stubborn Kinda Fellow” was the second album by Marvin Gaye and showed a departure from the Jazz and Blues influence of his first. Motown was realizing that the money and success was going to emerge from a younger market. Two of the biggest hits from Gaye’s second album included “Hitch Hike” and “Pride And Joy” as well as the title track. “That Stubborn Kinda Fellow” 45 can now sell for $40.00 but the album, released on Motown’s Tamla label in 1963, can get you $500.00 today.
Long before “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” there was “Destination Moon,” a movie from 1950 and one of the earliest to deal with the problems of space travel. Producer George Pal even included an appearance by cartoon favorite Woody Woodpecker to explain within the film the things that could go wrong in space. “Destination Moon” won an academy award in the visual effects category. The 5 Royales was an early Rhythm & Blues group who had many of their songs later covered by other groups including the Shirelles who had a big hit with “Dedicated to the One I Love.” Most of their songs like “Think,” later covered by James Brown, were written by guitarist Lowman Pauling who is also credited with first using feedback on a record. In 1959, Apollo Records released the album, “The Rockin’ 5 Royales.” A copy can get you $1,000.00 today. Their album, “Dedicated to You,” released a year earlier, is worth up to $1,500.00.
One of the best known classic rock songs of all time is “Good Lovin,” which hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 for the Young Rascals. The song is listed at # 325 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1978, the Grateful Dead released their own version. The single by the Young Rascals, released on Atlantic Records, is worth no more than $10.00. However, the 45 by the Dead, issued by Arista Records, can get you $350.00 with its picture sleeve.

It’s really a documentary featuring interviews, press conferences, snippets of original or orchestral versions of Beatles songs with voice overs. The album was essentially an attempt to capitalize on public demand for the Beatles. Although it sold more modestly than their other albums on Capitol Records, in its first week of release it was certified gold.
