Among the most successful and enduring was “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” starring two of Hollywood’s most famous sex symbols, Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. The Dovells, fronted by Len Barry, capitalized on a dance craze of the 60’s called the “stomp.” The “Bristol Stomp” referred to the dance as it was done at record hops in Bristol, Pennsylvania. The lyrics are still familiar to anyone who had a transistor radio back in the day. “The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol when they do the Bristol Stomp.” The 45 is worth up to $20.00 but the “Bristol Stomp” album, released on Parkway Records in 1961, is now worth up to $100.00.
In the early 60’s, there were Surf songs and Hot Rod songs. Many times both themes were recorded by the same groups such as the Beach Boys with “Surfin’ U.S.A” and “Surfer Girl” and tunes like “409” and “Little Deuce Coup.” The first instrumental Hot Rod song to make the charts was “Stick Shift” by the Duals in 1961. The original 45 is worth up to $50.00. In 1964 Sue Records released the “Stick Shift” album by the Duals. A copy can get you $300.00 today.
Kenny Dorham is considered by many as an underrated Jazz trumpeter. Despite that, he played with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Dorham also led his own group, the Jazz Prophets. In 1956 he recorded his debut album for Blue Note records,“‘Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia.” A copy today is worth up to $1,000.00. His 1959 album, “Quiet Kenny,” on New Jazz Records can now sell for $2,000.00.
