Eskew Reeder is not well known to your average music fan. Recording as Esquerita, he was a major influence on Little Richard with his wild, screaming, racy songs. He was Little Richard before Little Richard was Little Richard. Esquerita never made the charts himself but did write “Green Door,” a number one hit in 1956 on Dot records for Jim Lowe, which can get you $25.00. In 1959, Capitol Records released the album, “Esquerita.” It’s worth up to $500.00 today.

Sonny and Cher had their first hit in 1965 with “I Got You Babe.” And then the hits just kept coming, like “Baby Don’t Go” and “The Beat Goes On.” However, before they became world famous as Sonny & Cher they recorded as “Caesar & Cleo.” Their 1964 single of “Love is Strange” on Reprise Records in 1964, with its picture sleeve, is worth up to $200.00 today.

The 1950’s were golden times for movies dedicated to Rock N Roll and young gangs. Marlon Brando in the “Wild Bunch” might have started it all. Without a doubt he was one of the most influential of the Delta Blues artists of the 1930’s even though he recorded only 29 songs before his death from poisoning in 1938. Perhaps his best-known song is “Hell Hound on My Trail.” Released on Vocalion Records in 1937, the 78 is worth up to $10,000.00. His first 78 “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” on Conqueror Records can sell for $12,000.00 today.

Tommy Edwards had a giant hit record in 1958 with a song written by a vice president of the United States. Charles Dawes was vice president under Calvin Coolidge in 1912 when he composed “Melody in A Minor.” In 1951, Carl Sigman put words to the melody and a classic was born. “It’s All in the Game” was a Billboard number one hit.
