“Desperado” is unique among albums by the Eagles. It’s the only Eagles album, released by a U.S. record company, where the members are shown on the cover. “Desperado” is one of their most popular songs, but was never released as a single. Yet it appears on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 greatest songs of all time.” Issued in 1973 on Asylum Records, the album is only valued up to $15.00 unless you have or find a white label promo copy as seen here. Then the value jumps up to $500.00. (Find the values for all promo records that are worth more than the commercial versions released in stores with “Mighty John’s Promo Records Guide,” available in the yellow strip above.)

Many consider “Night Beat” the best album that Sam Cooke ever recorded. It doesn’t contain pop hits like “Wonderful World” and “Havin’ a Party.” It is much more reflective of the real Sam Cooke, intimate and contemplative. The album showcases his songwriting prowess and the purity of the first great voice of Soul. There are no hits, just a classic performance by one on the all-time greats in popular music. Released in 1963 by RCA, an original copy of “Night Beat” is worth up to $300.00 today.

In March of 1955 the producers of the TV show, “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts,” which was the “American Idol” show of the fifties, gave a thumbs down to a future king. I wonder if Simon Cowell would have said what the producers in the fifties said, that his performance was “too weak.” The song Elvis chose to sing was “Good Rockin’ Tonight.” The 1954 release on Sun Records is worth up to $1,500.00 on a 78 or a 45.

There was a number one song in 1959 that Dick Clark on American Bandstand and several radio stations refused to play as they felt the record was too violent. It’s an updated version of a 1911 folk song based on a murder in 1895 of William “Billy” Lyons by a pimp named Stacker Lee Shelton. The song was originally called “Stacker Lee” but in 1959, Lloyd Price hit big with his version called “Stagger Lee.” The 45 on ABC Paramount is worth up to $25.00 but the 78 version can sell for $125.00 today. Both are seen here.
