The Temptations was the premier male vocal group of the 1960’s and 70’s despite a steady change of personnel. Their hits are among some of the classics of that era including, “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Ain’t Too Proud To Be,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” and “Beauty is Only Skin Deep.” That 45 with picture sleeve can now sell for $75.00. Virginia Patterson Hensley, known forever more as Patsy Cline, became a Country legend and it all began in 1957 with her appearance on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts.” That was followed by her monster single, “Walking After Midnight.” The record on 78 rpm can sell now for $150.00. That smash hit was followed by many more. In 1965, her cover version of Pat Boone’s “Love Letters in the Sand” was released by Decca Records as an EP. It’s worth up to $500.00 today.

“The House of The Rising Sun” was a number 1 hit for the Animals in 1964, but the song was first recorded by Clarence Ashley in 1931 and by Country legend Roy Acuff in 1941. Before the Animals made their version the one everyone knows, it was also recorded by Glen Yarbrough and Leadbelly. The 1964 Animals single on M-G-M Records is worth up to $50.00 with its picture sleeve. A purple vinyl copy, as seen here, can get you a $1,500.00 today.

The Cleftones began their career by singing jingles for a school election at Jamaica High School in New York. When they turned pro they were one of the few groups at the time to get an attorney to negotiate their contract. Smart! Their first hit came in 1956 with “Little Girl Of Mine.” In 1961 they took an old standard, “Heart and Soul,” and hit again. That 45 can fetch $40.00 today. The album, “Heart and Soul,” released on Gee Records, is worth up to $300.00 in stereo and up to $500.00 in mono.

In Rock N Roll there are superstars and there are legends. Jimi Hendrix was and is both. With his life cut short like his contemporaries, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin, Hendrix lives through his influence on so many other performers who followed. His 1968 album, “Axis:Bold As Love,” released on Reprise Records, is worth up to $10.00 in stereo if the label is brown, up to $20.00 if the label is brown and orange, and up to $1,500 if the label is green, pink and yellow as seen here. Here are two examples. “No Other Way” by the Cautions, released on Shrine Records in 1966, is worth up to $1,800.00 today. And then there’s “I Choose You Baby” by the Celebrities on Boss Records. It can now sell for $2,500.00.

In 1943, 20TH Century Fox released the movie, “The Song of Bernadette,” which tells the story of Saint Bernadette Soubirous and her visions of the Virgin Mary in 1888 in Lourdes, France. Starring Jennifer Jones and Vincent Price, the soundtrack album featuring a cover with drawings by Norman Rockwell, is worth up to $125.00 today. “The Song of Bernadette” is just one of the 10,000 soundtracks on our Soundtracks guide on CD. In the spring of 1972, the Chi-Lites hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Oh Girl.” The single is currently not valued at more than $10.00. But their career began in 1959 when they were originally known as the Hi-Lites. In 1964, to reflect their pride in their hometown of Chicago, they put a “C” at the beginning of their name and became the Chi-Lites. Their most valuable record “She’s Mine,” released in 1965 on Blue Rock records, is worth up to $350.00 today.

Francis Albert Sinatra was a true legend in music and movies. He can be considered the first teen idol as the “bobbysoxers” went wild when ole’ blue eyes performed. Movie fans found his acting very appealing as well. He won an academy award for his part in “From Here To Eternity.” A founding member of the Rat Pack in Vegas, Sinatra’s first record with band leader Harry James was “From The Bottom Of My Heart.” Released on Brunswick Records in 1939, its worth up to $1,500.00 today.

Following up the success of their number 1 hit in 1963 with “He’s So Fine,” the Chiffons scored again with another “fine” song. “One Fine Day,” co-written by Carole King, brought the Chiffons to the top-10 again. That was followed by another “fine” song with “A Love So Fine.”  A copy of the 45 “One Fine Day” can now sell for $25.00. The album “One Fine Day,” released on Laurie Records in 1963, is worth up to $200.00 today.
