September 13, 2021 Records of the Day

Here’s a trivia question. Who was the first group to appear on American Bandstand when the legendary TV show went national on August 5, 1957? The answer is the Chordettes whose big hit of “Lollipop” would follow a year later. Their first big hit was “Mr. Sandman” in 1954. A copy of the 45 can now sell for $25.00. Double the price for the 78 rpm single. Their last hit was in 1961 with “Never on Sunday,” from the movie of the same name. In 1961, Cadence Records released the “Never on Sunday” EP by the Chordettes, which also included “Lollipop.” The EP, as seen here, is worth up to $100.00 today.
