The Crystals, best known for hits like “Then He Kissed Me” and “Da Do Ron Ron,” first tasted success in 1962 with “There’s No Other like My Baby,” now worth up to $40.00. Their first album, “The Crystals Twist Uptown,” contains their first hit and their second, “Uptown.” Released on Philles Records in 1962, the album can sell for $600.00 today.

Among Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 500 Albums of All Time is “Having a Rave Up” by the Yardbirds. It’s been called a “bridge between beat groups and psychedelia.” Although Eric Clapton has four songs on the record, he is not pictured on the cover. A stereo copy is worth no more than $40.00 but a mono version of the album, released on Epic Records in 1965, is worth up to $125.00 today.

EP’s can be more collectible than 45’s, 78’s, or albums. An EP (extended play) is usually a 7 inch album, mostly with two songs on each side of the record. In 1956, Carl Perkins wrote and recorded a true Rock N Roll classic with “Blue Suede Shoes.” A copy on a 45 or 78, released on Sun Records, is worth up to $75.00 but the EP, as shown here, is worth up to $600.00 today.

American International Pictures released several “Beach” movies in the mid-1960’s, most of them with a regular cast of Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and funny man Don Rickles. Rock N Roll, comedy, and bikinis were a sure formula for success. The 1964 movie, “Pajama Party,” with Annette on the cover, issued by Buena Vista Records, is worth up to $125.00 today.

These are records you should know about. Among the most collectible types of Rock N Roll are Doo Wop and Rockabilly records. A Rockabilly example would be “Having Myself a Ball” by Bill Bowen and the Rockets. Released on Meteor Records in 1956, it’s worth up to $3,000.00. And look for the Doo Wop single “Would You Do the Same for Me” by the Candlelighters. Released on Delta Records in 1958, it’s worth up to $2,500.00 today. “Records you should know about” are records that most people have never heard by recording artists most people have never heard of BUT can be worth a LOT of money. Mighty John’s “Records You Should Know About” appraisal guide lists thousands of them, each worth at least up to $500.00 or more. Ain’t She Sweet” is a standard written in the 1920’s and recorded by such diverse artists as Ferlin Husky, Guy Lombardo, and Pearl Bailey. But it’s the Beatles’ version with John Lennon singing lead and Pete Best on drums that’s worth the money. Released on ATCO Records in 1964, the 45 with its picture sleeve is worth up to $400.00 today.

In 1952, a young Brigitte Bardot appeared in a black and white film called “The Girl in the Bikini.” Playing the part of a lighthouse keeper’s daughter, Bardot’s stunning good looks and lack of clothing caused a country-wide sensation. Her real father was so outraged that he sued the producers. Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles are credited with having their first hit in 1964 with “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman.” Released on Peak Records the 45, with picture sleeve, can sell for $75.00. Their biggest hit came after they changed their name to LaBelle. Their song “Lady Marmalade” has become a classic. Patti soon went solo with more hits like “On My Own” and “New Attitude.” The album “Sweethearts of The Apollo” by Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, released on Newtown Records in 1963, is worth up to $300.00 today.

In 1967, London Records released the 45 ,“We Love You,” by the Rolling Stones. But the public and radio DJ’s latched onto the flip side and “Dandelion” became the hit, yet still not as successful as earlier singles such as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Get off My Cloud.” A copy of “Dandelion” with its picture sleeve is worth up to $400.00 today.

In 1961, Troy Shondell became a one-hit wonder with the song “This Time (We’re Really Breaking Up).” It sold 3 million copies in just one year thanks to the popularity here and in Britain. A copy of the single on Liberty Records is worth no more than $20.00 but on Goldcrest Records the value jumps up to $100.00. Both versions are shown here.
