September 18, 2021 Record of the Day

There was a number one song in 1959 that Dick Clark on American Bandstand and several radio stations refused to play as they felt the record was too violent. It’s an updated version of a 1911 folk song based on a murder in 1895 of William “Billy” Lyons by a pimp named Stacker Lee Shelton. The song was originally called “Stacker Lee” but in 1959 Lloyd Price hit big with his version called “Stagger Lee.” The 45 on ABC Paramount is worth up to $25.00 but the 78 version can sell for $125.00 today. Both are seen here.
